Senny Camara

Medium: Kora (instrument)

Based in: Paris, France

Languages: French, English

Born in Dakar and living between Paris and Mbour, Senny Camara is a singer, songwriter, composer and producer whose work moves between Afro-folk, blues, fusion and sacred music. She sings in Wolof, Serer and Mandinka.

Her music begins with strings, those of the kora, which she has made a companion in becoming herself as both an artist and a woman. She is one of the few women in the world to play an instrument long reserved for men, and she learned it at the Dakar Conservatory. Today her playing is recognized and supported by the great masters of the kora, whom she calls her elder brothers.

Senny was raised by her grandmother in Tataguine, in southern Senegal, steeped in the traditions of the Serer people. It was also through her grandmother that she came to know the Manding culture of her father, a former tirailleur sénégalais whose deep attachment to France left a lasting mark on her.

Free-spirited and tenacious, she draws strength from a constellation of women she holds close: Vandana Shiva, Fatou Diome, Nina Simone, Josephine Baker, and the Senegalese-Guinean diva Mahwa Kouyaté, who remains one of her greatest inspirations.

Across her voice, her lyrics and her kora runs a quiet insistence on love and oneness. After singing Boolo (Unity) on her 2020 EP, she released her debut album Yene (Wish) in December 2024, a hymn to peace, love and the hope that we might share this planet together.

For Senny, the kora heals the wounds of the soul in a fragile world.
